As one of Italy's most exciting big red wines, Taurasi can be glorious, but there are, sadly, just a few great examples being imported in the U.S. Luckily, we discovered the exceptional small producer Perillo. Michele Perillo and family continue a tradition of winemaking that dates back to 1887. The family estate is up in the tiny village of Castelfranci, an hour’s drive from Naples and 1600 feet above sea level with Aglianico vines planted in 1930. This is easily my favorite Taurasi. I love its earth-driven nose and palate, delicious plummy fruit, and notes of blood orange, licorice, and leather framed by velvety noble tannins. Precision, power and elegance. It’s thrilling to drink now with lamb, beef, pasta with mushrooms or red sauce, but will continue to improve for many years. If Taurasi is “the Barolo of the south,” then this is the Bartolo Mascarello of Taurasi. There is a lot going on here! Enjoy over the next 20 years. “In Castelfranci, one of the highest villages of Irpinia, the Baiano vineyard is the source of this outstanding wine. A rethinking of Aglianico identity, it’s dense garnet in the glass, full of fresh wild-strawberry aromas with earthy tones of boiled beetroot, smoky woodland and tar. If the red-fruit character is fairly atypical for Aglianico, the fresh profile is supported by chewy, ripe tannins and firm acidity. The savoury finish is amazing. A more elegant style of Aglianico, thanks to the altitude, the vintage and winemaking." - 95 Aldo Fiordelli, Decanter
