Collection: Hungarian Goodness

This is our fifth year promoting the fascinating and incredibly delicious dry wines of Hungary. What humbly began as an initiative to spread the word about the dry wines emerging from Hungary’s flagship grape, Furmint, has provided a wonderful excuse to celebrate the broad diversity and success of what remains to be the old world’s best kept wine secret!

Vineyards have been an important part of the Hungarian landscape since Roman times. Hungary’s most famous region, Tokaj, enjoyed a long run of fame hundred’s of years ago, when its painstakingly laborious sweet wines were some of the most sought after bottles throughout the Middle Ages. To get to present day, we fast forward through the devastation of phylloxera, two world wars, the communist regime, and a shift in consumer preference away from sweet wines - Hungary has not only had to rebuild, but it’s also had to rebrand. Over the last 20 years, the modern generation of winemakers has improved by leaps and bounds, radiating from Tokaj across an entirely underrated wine country.

Through the lens of reinvention, imagination, and severe dedication, we are now able to enjoy the distinctive, charming, memorable wines that offer these key features of Hungary’s native grapes and what positions the country on its current trajectory to reclaim its former glory!

After participating in a Hungarian wine seminar and tasting through a lot of Hungarian wines ranging from good to great, here are my favorites. These are stunning dry wines that offer not only beautiful fruit, but also intense minerality and kaleidoscopic complexity.

We don’t usually offer mixed six-pack or case discounts, but I really want you to try something new that I’m excited about, so…..order any 6 bottles from this offer and receive a 5% discount, or 12 bottles and receive a 10% discount. Orders placed through the website will have the discounts applied manually when we process your order. All of these wines are available now in very, very limited quantities, so act quickly if you are interested - first come, first served.
Demeter Zoltán 2021 Furmint Veres Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

Demeter Zoltán 2021 Furmint Veres Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

Cellar Selection. While all of the white wines in this offer will easily age gracefully for 7-15 years, this is the one wine that will really benefit, in fact, begs for more time in the bottle. Structured and youthfully tight, the palate is coiled to explode with some time in the cellar. Nectarine fruit and minerals galore! Enjoy through 2033.

Tokaji Nobilis 2021 Hasrlevelu Barakonyi Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

Tokaji Nobilis 2021 Hasrlevelu Barakonyi Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

A favorite from previous vintages is back and even better than ever…because 2021vintage!  Expressive, complex nose. Very rich and textured with dried apricot, mirabelle plum, fresh honeycomb, and mineral on the very impressive palate. Drink through 2032. So good!

Brogdog Bromuhely 2022 Furmint Lapis Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

Brogdog Bromuhely 2022 Furmint Lapis Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

Furmint from the Lapis vineyard is creamy, yet cut with an extremely mineral profile. It’s like honeyed stone fruit rolled in a spice tray. The tension in the palate gives energy to this mineral dominated wine. After tasting this wine, I was shocked at how low the price is. Drink through 2031. Very limited.

Bott Pince 2022 Furmint Elohegy, Tokaji

Bott Pince 2022 Furmint Elohegy, Tokaji

Expressive, complex nose. The palate is very well-balanced with orchard fruit and lots of mineral action - especially on the looooong finish. Drink through 2030.

Kikelet 2021 Harslevelu Kassai Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

Kikelet 2021 Harslevelu Kassai Vineyard, Tokaj, Hungary

This wine is a dreamy combination of Chenin Blanc aromas and texture with peach-like fruit on the palate given lift by lively acidity. With its luxurious mouthfeel and beguiling complexity, it can be geeky if you want it to be, or just plain delicious. Another incredibly mineral-driven wine.

Fetke Béla 2016 Harslevelu Somló

Fetke Béla 2016 Harslevelu Somló

An intriguing wine. While definitely not an “orange wine,” the  color verges on orange from the hight percentage of botrytis-affected grapes along with a very mild oxidative note which adds to the wine’s complexity.  The palate is indeed dry with high acidity framing the botrytis notes and dried apricot fruit.  Enjoy now and over the next year.

Wetzer 2020 Kekfrankos Blumenthal Sopron

Wetzer 2020 Kekfrankos Blumenthal Sopron

Beautiful dark plum fruit, baking spices, thyme and a dusty note highlight this wine’s aromatic profile.  The palate of the Wetzer has more structure that past Kékfrankos we’ve worked with and seems more “serious.”  Both red and dark fruit, blood orange, dried herbs and a hint of earth are supported by grippy tannins.  Enjoy with hearty stews, lamb, beef or roast pork shoulder now, or better yet over the next six to eight years.

Demeter Zoltan 2023 Eszter Sweet Szamorodni, Tokaji 500ml

Demeter Zoltan 2023 Eszter Sweet Szamorodni, Tokaji 500ml

This the equivalent of a 5 Puttonyos Tokaji in terms of sweetness.  Explosive nose with botrytis scents soaring out of the glass.  The perfect balance between ripe peach and apricot fruit with a note of grilled pineapple, spicy botrytis, sweetness and lively acidity. Really delicious now, but should improve for 20+ years and live happily for another 30 years after that.  While $75 isn’t cheap, this wine is a real deal for this level of dessert wine.
