2016 Olga Raffault, Chinon, Less Picasses $28.99
I don’t mean to sound like a broken record but… longtime readers of this column know that traditionally-minded Olga Raffault is not just our favorite producer of Chinon, but of Cabernet Franc grown anywhere in the world. The Les Picasses vineyard is one of the finest in Chinon, thus making it one of the finest Cabernet Franc vineyards in the world. Fifty+ year old vines grown on clay with a limestone base combined with minimalist winemaking give us one amazing Chinon. The 2016 is one of the most structured young Les Picasses I’ve ever had. Still, this wine is all about the earthy, minerally side of Chinon; beautiful raspberry fruit supports leather and soil tones, framed by mouth watering acidity and fine-grained tannins with amazing finesse. While the 2016 Olga Raffault Les Picasses is certainly very enjoyable to drink now with charcuterie, grilled fatty ribeye or a simple pork shoulder roast, this wine will improve as it ages effortlessly in the cellar through 2040. I've had the pleasure of enjoying the 1978, 1989 and 1995 over the past few years and flipped over all three vintages. I'm confident the 2016 will join the ranks of the above trio of mature vintages.

2019 Goodfellow, Pinot Noir, Durant, Dundee Hills, Willamette Valley, OR $38.89
Beautiful, and what I mean is beautiful whole-cluster fermentation (60%) aromatics that soar from the glass and announce that this is serious wine. The elegant palate is flat-out delicious with both red and dark fruit complementing the wine's underlying earthy nature. Outstanding balance and sneaky structure support this concentrated wine and make it suitable for aging up to 10+ years in a cool cellar. It's pretty damn delicious now, but if you can keep your hands off it, will continue to gain in complexity for years to come. This is my favorite vintage of Goodfellow Durant Pinot yet. “The summer of 2019 was cool in the Willamette Valley, producing juicy and elegant wines with exceptional aromatics and refreshing character. The 2019 Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir was selected from three neutral 500L puncheons, and fermented with 65% whole cluster. It is supple, with r-ed fruit, flowers, dark and sweet spice, loamy earth and amaro. On the palate: boysenberry, dark cherry, and pomegranate. Light bodied but structural, with a great savory finish.” - Winery notes

2008 Lopez de Heredia, Rioja Reserva, Viña Tondonia, Spain $47.89
Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is one of Spain's greatest wines. With complexity and longevity that would embarrass most first growth Bordeaux and at about 1/10 the price, this is truly an amazing wine and equally amazing value. Lopez de Heredia is perhaps the most traditional winery in the world with little changing in the way they make wine over the last 130+ years. The nose offers enticing aromas of dried cherries, cigar box, leather and faint vanilla bean. The perfectly balanced and supremely elegant palate is well structured with good acidity and refined tannins that frame the complex flavors of dusty minerals, plums, dried herbs, orange peel and hazelnuts. Buy a case and watch it develop and gain in complexity over the next 30 years. “The 2008 Viña Tondonia Reserva is an absolute classic in the making. At age 12 the wine is still a puppy, and though very, very easy to drink now, it has still not developed any of its secondary layers of complexity that will arrive with further bottle age. The supremely refined nose delivers scents of black cherries, black raspberries, cigar smoke, a lovely array of Rioja spice tones, a touch of meatiness, a complex base of soil and a lovely foundation of oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with lovely soil signature and grip, suave, fine-grained tannins and a long, complex and tangy finish. To my palate, this beautiful wine deserves at least another six to eight years in the cellar before drinking, as there is still a lot to unfold here with the fullness of time. But, it is so perfectly balanced today that I fully expect to see a significant percentage of the bottles not make it that long!” 93+ John Gilman & “Dark, bright-rimmed garnet. An expressive bouquet displays red and black currant, dried cherry, cigar box, vanilla, rose oil and cured tobacco scents plus a baking spice topnote. Appealingly sweet and energetic red and dark berry, floral pastille and chewing tobacco flavors show tight focus and spicy cut. Candied rose and vanilla notes linger on the long, lively finish, which is framed by smooth, well-judged tannins.” 94 Vinous
