NV (2019) Pertois-Lebrun, Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs, L’Extravertie, Grand Cru Champagne $49.99
Over the past couple years, Pertois-Lebrun has become our go-to Blanc de Blancs Champagne producer, ousting some of our other long-time and much better know Grower Champagne producers. The Champagnes of Pertois-Lebrun are precise and chiseled with pristine fruit supported by balancing acidity. From the outstanding 2019 vintage, the L’Extravertie offers a vein of minerality that runs throughout the palate. Enjoy now, or let it keep improving and gaining in complexity over the next decade. A stunning value! “The NV (2019) Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs L’Extravertie Grand Cru was picked in Chouilly, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oiry, Cramant and Oger and the base wines were fermented in (neutral) oak. Cold butter and gentle cream appear teasingly on the nose. The palate is immediately taut but benefits from fine mousse. This has the salty slenderness of chalk-based blanc de blancs and a beautifully bracing nature of that style, only marginally softened by oak and displaying lovely depth. So lively and bright. Dosage 3.5gr/L. Drink through 2033.” - 91 Vinous I think it’s even better than the awkward review above.

2022 Mullineux, (Dry) Old Vines White Blend, Swartland, So. Africa $35.99 bottle / $197.94($32.99) six-pack
Comprised of a blend of grape varieties we’ve never seen together in one wine before, the Old Vines White Blend is mostly Chenin Blanc with Grenache Blanc, Viognier and Semillon Gris. My tasting notes: “Wow! Chenin dominates the nose with added complexity from the other varieties. The palate has excellent textural feel and great energy with notes of lush fruit, balancing acidly and a strong core of minerals pulsing through the palate. This wine is unique and very cool!” A lot of wine for the money. “The 2022 White Old Vines comes from vines up to 70 years old, 75% Chenin Blanc with several other varieties. Aged almost a year in barrels and foudres, the perfumed bouquet offers hazelnut, dried honey and yellow fruit aromas. The palate is waxy in texture, very well-balanced, and understated on the entry. Then, there is a wave of slightly honeyed pithy fruit that feels very voluminous and well-defined. Quite a multi-faceted Chenin blend, this will age beautifully in bottle. Drink 2024-2040.” - 92 Vinous & “An aromatic, full-bodied white with aromas of mangoes, papayas, honeysuckle, grilled herbs and beeswax. Textural and lightly oily, with a fresh minerality on the finish.” - 93 J.S.

2022 Mullineux, (Dry) Chenin Blanc Old Vines, “Granite” Eikelaan Vineyard, Swartland, So. Africa $89.99 bottle / $479.94($79.99) six-pack
This is probably my favorite wine in this offering as it’s insanely good Chenin Blanc, and I love Chenin. With its pristine fruit, shimmering acidity and a mineral vein that courses throughout the palate, this is as good as any young Chenin from Savennieres, Vouvray, or anywhere for that matter. While this wine is already exciting to drink now, it will continue to evolve for 15+ years in a cool cellar. The reviews below don’t do this wine justice. “Starting with a rocky essence and firm mineral core, the 2022 Granite Chenin Blanc delivers notes of yellow and green apples with dusty pears before fresh-cut Meyer lemon and citrus blossom aromas waft from the glass. The Chenin Blanc is medium to full-bodied with a delightful mineral tension that will remain food friendly for 20 years, maybe longer. It's a lovely wine that’s quite cerebral and keeps me thinking. Gliding to a fresh, mineral-laced finish, this gorgeous Chenin Blanc will remain fit to fight for any occasion and comes with a wide array of food and wine pairing applications. Nicely done!” - 94 W.A. & “I love the crushed stone aromas here, with lemon and grapefruit pith, white lavender and apricot stones. Sleek, mineral and textured, with a medium body and a very long, mineral and almost chalky finish. Drink or hold.” - 94 J.S.

2022 Mullineux, (Dry) Chenin Blanc Old Vines, “Schist” Roundstone Vineyard, Swartland, So. Africa $89.99 bottle / $479.94($79.99) six-pack
This wine is the Schist! Sorry…couldn’t help myself. The Schist Roundstone Chenin is similar in some ways to the “Granite” but a bit tighter out of the gate and has a different mineral expression. Truly outstanding with a long life ahead of it. “Displaying a softer nose with a dusty and ripe fruit condition, the 2022 Schist Chenin Blanc displays a more approachable expression with aromas of waxy apples and a broad, open accessibility. Medium-bodied, the palate is abroad and ready for action, showing succulent acidity with notes of juicy peaches and Honeycrisp apple before concluding with a ripe, succulent finish. Enjoy with food.” - 93 W.A. / “Showing mango stone and baked apple notes with hints of juniper spice and lemon cream. Grapefruit, too. Full-bodied, phenolic and broadly textured, with excellent flavor concentration. Comes back together at the end with a stony restraint. Drink or hold.”+ 94 J.S. & “The 2022 Chenin Blanc Schist is aged in 500-liter older barrels with no bâtonnage. It has a beautifully defined bouquet with pressed white flowers, litchee, powdered stone and a touch of yellow fruit. The palate is very well-balanced with a texturally seductive opening, lightly spiced with plenty of spicy ginger here and a vivid white pepper-driven finish that lingers in the mouth. Excellent. Drink 2024-2040.” - 93 Vinous

2020 Mullineux, Syrah, Swartland, So. Africa $39.99 bottle / $215.94($35.99) six-pack
Comprised of fruit from three sites with different soil types (granite, schist & iron) and fermented with 80% stems for expanded aromatic lift, the nose is classic Syrah (reminiscent of Cornas) with aromas of violets, cracked pepper, dried herbs and a hint of earth. The palate is fresh and balanced (13% alc.) with dark Syrah fruit, licorice, dried herbs, soil-driven notes and chalky tannins providing good structure for now, and another 10+ years further development. This is a really great deal in the Syrah arena. “This is well-defined and focused on the nose, red berry fruit intermixed with light ember and garrigues-like aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity and grip with a Cornas-like finish leaning more towards black than red fruit and cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. This will give 20 years' drinking pleasure. Drink 2024-2040.” - 92 Vinous /92 W.A. / 92 J.S. / 92 W.S

2020 Mullineux, Syrah “Schist” Roundstone Vineyard, Swartland, So. Africa $119.99 bottle / $647.94($107.99) six-pack
The 2020 Schist Syrah has dark, brooding - Hermitage-like aromatics with plum fruit and soil-driven notes. The youthful palate is tight and coiled with powerful tannins and superb balance between the fruit, acidity, tannins and 13% (yay!) alcohol. The Syrahs from the Roundtable vineyard are the most structured and age-worthy according to Chris Mullineux, and after tasting it, I’m not surprised. This is easily 25+ year Syrah. Got an anniversary or a kid born in 2020? “The 2020 Syrah Schist, that normally has small berries with thicker skins, has an upfront nose with ebullient red and blackberry fruit, a little riper and more generous than the Granite. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, perhaps more elegant than the Granite Syrah, supremely well focused with a peppery finish that is complex and engaging. Even more black pepper on the aftertaste, this has outstanding persistence. Bon vin! Drink 2025-2042” - 94 Vinous & “Aromas of plums, tobacco leaf, tar and grilled rosemary. Full-bodied with lovely density. Fine-grained tannins are coated in red and blue fruit, giving structure and focus to the savory and brooding palate. Wonderfully composed. Expressive and deep while remaining focused.” - 95 J.S. / “Marked with the same fresh crunchy red fruit as the rest of the range, the 2020 Schist Syrah pops with a dusty floral grip and hints of red spice and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, the mouthfeel displays a delightful and food-friendly mineral tension before focused tannins grip the gumline. The wine persists on the palate, revealing breadth and depth with focus and harmony before lingering with a tannic edge. Drink it over the next 15 to 18 years.” - 93+ W.A.

2020 Mullineux, Syrah, “Iron” Kasteelsig Vineyard, Swartland, So. Africa $119.99 bottle / $647.94($107.99) six-pack
Don’t tell the other two Syrahs, but this one is probably my favorite. Very dark in color, I love the beguiling nose with hints of plum, garrigue, violets a touch of wild game. The palate has wonderful lift and energy pushing the red and blue fruits forward that play nicely with the wine’s strong soil signature. Excellent balance and suave tannins provide the structure for a long and graceful aging curve. Enjoy over the next 20 to 25 years. Superb. “A lovely herbal nose of rosemary, sage, pine and crushed blackberries. Full-bodied with so much to unpack. Complex, intense and long but no overdone one bit. So transparent and clear but incredibly savory and deep. Bergamot. A pleasure.” - 95 J.S.

2019 Antoniotti, Bramaterra, Alto Piemonte $49.99 bottle / $269.94($44.99) six-pack
Damn!!! This is incredibly expressive, terroir-driven wine and about as "old-school" as it gets.  Ethereal nose with Nebbiolo fruit, tobacco, earth, leather, etc. The palate is fairly full-bodied for Alto Piemonte, but still very lively and vibrant. Immediately recognizable as Piemontese Nebbiolo (even Barbaresco-ish) but with a different kind of complexity and soil expression than you get from the Langhe. Comprised of about 90% Nebbiolo with splashes of Croatina and Vespolina.  Already delicious, this needs time to really reach its (very) full potential.  This is the real deal and runs circles around most $100 Barolo and Barbarescos. If you’re willing to spend $50 on Barolo or Barbaresco, but not Bramaterra, you’re missing out. Drink 2023 - 2040. Only 50 cases of this wine made into the U.S.

2019 Giacomo Fenocchio, Barolo, Piedmont $55.99
This is incredibly good Barolo “normale” - significantly better than many single cru Barolo that cost two and three times the price. Giacomo Fenocchio is the source of some of the best traditional Barolo being made, yet is somehow still under the radar for many Piemontese enthusiasts. The wines receives great press and scores year in and year out, but somehow goes unnoticed by the tastemakers that send comparable Barolo into unicorn status and the price into the stratosphere. This wine is, by far, the most Barolo for the money we’ve come across from the great 2019 vintage. “The 2019 Barolo pours a deep ruby and comes from a single parcel just outside of Bussia in Monforte d'Alba. It saw 40 days of maceration and was fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in 25- to 35-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks. Alluring and ripe, it reveals notes of balsamic, black cherry, and purple flowers. This medium-bodied red has moderate tannins, with elegant freshness throughout, and expresses wild raspberry fruit and dusty earth. It is an outstanding value.” - 92 Jeb Dunnuck This is an incredible value.
