2018 J.L.Chave Selections, Hermitage Rouge, Farconnet $69.89 bottle / $399.00($66.50) six-pack
For many, Domaine Chave's Hermitage is the pinnacle of syrah - bar none.  Farconnet is part of Chave's ultra high quality negociant project. Compared to Chave's regular Hermitage, Farconnet is more accessible in terms of structure (not to mention less than a quarter of the price).  The 2018 Farconnet is all about the combination of complexity allied with power and finesse while expressing Hermitage's unique terroir.  While this beauty will easily improve and cellar gracefully for 10+ years, it has an accessibility that makes it charming and easy to enjoy now.  “Inky violet color. Displays ripe dark fruit, licorice, olive, potpourri and cracked pepper aromas, plus a smoky mineral flourish that adds an energetic lift. Sappy and broad on the palate, offering appealingly sweet black and blue fruit, cola, licorice and exotic spice flavors that show impressive depth and vivacity. Finishes very long and precise, with a lingering floral quality and dusty, slowly building tannins. Drink 225-2035” - 94 Vinous

2018 J.L. Chave Selections, Hermitage Blanc, Blanche $69.89 / bottle / $399.00($66.50) six-pack
Hell yeah, this is real-deal white Hermitage at a screaming price from the master - Jean Louis Chave! This old-school Hermitage Blanc is 100% Marsanne and is more accessible than Domaine J.L. Chave's $325+ regular white Hermitage. This insanely delicious wine walks the tightrope of being a huge rich wine while maintaining a sense of elegance at the same time. No review yet. Drink over the next decade.

2020 Domaine Faury, Condrieu (100% Viognier) $53.89
Condrieu is the most famous white wine producing appellation in the entire Rhone Valley and focuses on just one varietal: Viognier. Tucked right up in the north of the Rhône Valley on the river’s right bank we find Condrieu, an appellation celebrated for its legendary white wines. Good Viognier from Condrieu is unlike Viognier from anywhere else in the world (thank god). Faury makes a tiny bit of classic Condrieu with kaleidoscopic aromatic complexity and a palate that offers fresh apricot fruit, intense minerality, and a rich, almost oily texture balanced by vibrant acidity. No reviews for the 2020 yet, so here is the Vinous review of the 2019 (very similar growing season) for reference: “Green-tinged straw. Powerful, mineral-accented scents of fresh pear, peach and violet are brightened by a building citrus pith nuance. Silky and tightly focused on entry, then deeper on the midpalate, offering concentrated orchard, pit fruit, Meyer lemon flavors and a hint of honeysuckle. Closes with repeating florality and firm, impressive, mineral persistence and cut.” - 94 Vinous

2020 Domaine Faury, Cote-Rotie $59.99
For many, the tiny appellation of Cote-Rotie in France's northern Rhone Valley is the source of the world's most exhilarating syrah.  Because Cote-Rotie is such a small appellation, its production is naturally limited and finding great traditionally made Cote-Rotie is becoming harder and harder as wine collectors around the world snap them up.  Finding great traditionally made Cote-Rotie at a good price is rare but Faury's 2020 Cote-Rotie is just such a wine.  Soaring aromatics that are at once both floral and gamy segue to a palate that is both incredibly intense and elegant with beautiful red Syrah fruit, earth, a strong mineral core and sneaky structure ensuring a long, graceful evolution in your cool cellar. “Dark violet color. Potent, smoke-tinged red and dark berry, olive and licorice qualities on the sharply focused nose. Penetrating, spice-laced cherry-cola, blackberry and exotic spice flavors steadily deepen and become sweeter with air. The spice and floral notes recur an impressively long, energetic finish shaped by fine-grained and well-knit tannins. Drink 2029-2039” - 95 Vinous

2020 Domaine de Gouye, Saint Joseph Rouge Vieilles Vignes, Northern Rhone $39.99 bottle / $221.94($36.99) six-pack
In case you missed it in our December newsletter feature:  We love the 100% Syrah wines of the Northern Rhone that express soil-transparency and terroir pulled directly from the earth and vigneron Philippe Desbos's wines of Domaine de Gouye are perfect examples. Domaine de Gouye is the epitome of old-school, classic northern Rhône Syrah. The Desbos vineyard lies just above the legendary Raymond Trollat vines that now go into Rhone icon Pierre Gonon's Saint Joseph (and sells for $150+) in the commune of Saint-Jean-de-Muzols. It is one of the original villages that comprised the Saint-Joseph AOC, directly across the Rhone River from the hill of Hermitage. The Debos's 2020 Vieilles Vignes offers a deep, smokey nose with accents of violets, fennel, pepper, cured black olives and earth. The palate is more structured like a fine Hermitage than most Saint Josephs with a firm tannic backbone and plenty of acidity to keep the blueberry and raspberry fruit vibrant and allowing the granitic minerality and earth tones to take center stage.  Enjoy this vin de garde now with garlic lamb dishes and the like, or better yet cellar through 2045. Limited. “Displays highly expressive aromas of blackberry, cherry compote, pungent flowers, olive and black pepper, plus a hint of smoky bacon. Chewy and expansive in the mouth, offering intense, spice and mineral accented black and blue fruit, bitter chocolate and violet pastille flavors, with a sweetening touch of cola. Finishes impressively long, energetic and focused, with resonating floral and spice notes and youthfully firming tannins.” - 94 Vinous

2018 Domaine du Collier, Saumur Blanc, Loire Valley $54.99 bottle / $299.94($49.99) six-pack
Within a short period of time, Antoine Foucault is already making some of the most exciting wines in the Loire Valley. The Domaine du Collier was created in 1999 by Antoine (son of Charly Foucault from the famed Clos Rougeard). Having worked at Clos Rougeard for four years and still at the young age of 26, he took the opportunity to buy four-hectares of vines in the commune of Brézé in the best lieu-dit of 'La Ripaille'. The estate comprises 6 hectares with the vast majority of the estate planted to Chenin Blanc (including some 100-year old vines) and just under a hectare of Cabernet Franc. There is a substance to these wines that is impressive, but more importantly there is clarity to them, a precision that demands attention. These are powerful, mineral-driven wines that do not assault the palate but seek to impress on grounds of their brilliant composition. The 2018 Saumur Blanc is from low yielding old vines grown on predominantly clay limestone soils and is a very powerful and complex wine even while young. The palate is very lively, almost linear at this stage, with crystalline Chenin fruit and Saumur minerality. As with the best Chenin Blanc, the magic happens as the wines age and evolve, and this will do so magnificently through 2030+.

2021 Domaine Courbis, Saint Péray Blanc, Le Tram $26.89
This wine knocked me out!  This 50%-50% blend of Marsanne and Roussanne offers the weight and texture of Grand Cru White Burgundy, the finesse of fine Mosel Riesling and a unique terroir expression that is all Northern Rhone.  While youthfully tight today, it is already a beautiful mineral-driven dry white with notes of ripe nectarine, dried thyme and orange zest. Delicious on its own, this wine is also infinitely versatile at the table.

2021 Huet, Vouvray Sec, Le Haut Lieu $31.89 net
And now, from perhaps the most famous winery in the Loire Valley…Domaine Huet is the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world when it comes to the wines of Vouvray. Huet's 2021 Le Haut Lieu Sec is another stunning wine in a long line of true greatness.  This is all about condensed stoney minerality wrapped in pristine orchard fruit and given lift by laser-like acidity.  Enjoy over the next 15 years. “This is a very fine, fragrant and floral Le Haut Lieu Sec. While delicate, the 2021 fills the mouth with a cloud of pure fruit reminiscent of violets, apple and nectarine skin. There's a fine sinew that pulls the wine through on the finish. It can be approached in its youth but will go on and on. Drink through 2040.” - 94 Vinous - Very limited

2016 Val di Suga, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany $54.89
This may be the last great Brunello (100% Sangiovese) from the epic 2016 Tuscan vintage. Certainly, it’s a contender for the best Brunello deal of this vintage as well as one of my personal favorites. Aromatically, texturally and flavor-wise, this big red is all about precision and balance. Get it while you still can. “There’s something savory and slightly rustic about the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino that I find quite attractive. Baked black cherries, balsamic spice and hints of animal musk form up to create a beguiling display. The textures are silky-smooth, with cooling acids and salty minerals lifting the expression while giving way to tart red fruits…the 2016 comes across as both youthfully structured but also spicy and fresh. This is a blend of Val di Suga’s vineyards throughout Montalcino, refined all in large Slavonian oak. Drink through 2034” - 92 Vinous Also: 94 Jeb Dunnuck, 93 Wine Spectator, 94 James Suckling. 2021 McKinlay, Pinot Noir, Estate, Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley, OR $39.99 bottle
The first great 2021 Oregon Pinot Noir release of the vintage! There are a lot of domestic wineries that claim to make "Burgundian" style Pinot Noirs, but no one outside of the Cote d'Or makes a more Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir than Matt Kinne of McKinlay.  Matt has been issuing reference-standard Willamette Valley Pinot Noir since the '80s and has a track record of producing age-worthy Pinots matched only by the late David Lett of Eyrie and Russ Raney (formerly) of Evesham Wood.  Matt's formula for greatness is simple:  An excellent old vine vineyard with own rooted Wadenswil, Pommard and Hanzel clones, beautiful fruit picked early (13% alcohol!), native yeast fermentation and aging in old neutral oak barrels.  The 2021 McKinlay Estate Pinot Noir is another classic.  Aromas of violets, cloves and earth lead to the tightly wound palate which offers ultra-pure fruit, spices, and another dose of earth.  Velvety tannins and noble acidity provide this brooding wine with excellent structure.  If you like or are curious about Pinot Noirs that don't just "age," but actually evolve and improve for 15+ years, this is a must purchase.  Buy a case and enjoy the ride.  DON'T MISS THIS!
