018 Dom. M. Delarche, Pernand-Vergelesses Blanc, Les Combottes, White Burgundy $36.99
Longtime readers of this newsletter know my affinity for Pernand-Vergelesse - both the reds, and especially whites. The beguiling and undeniable gout de terroir of great Pernand-Vergelesse is on full display in the Marius Delarche Les Combottes (100% Chardonnay). The Les Combottes vineyard sits high up on the hill just slightly around the bend from the famous grand cru of Corton. This blessed site typically displays highly aromatic, mineral-driven wines and Delarche's version is a perfect example of this chiseled style. Aromas of wet stones intermingle with scents of lime, green apple and baked pear. The rich palate expands with a little time in the glass with flavors that reprise the aromatics. The mid-palate shows off the baked pear component while a strong core of tangy mineral action runs through the entire wine to the stoney finish. As delicious and satisfying as this wine is now, the best is yet to come. Enjoy this special wine now and over the next seven years. An amazing deal.

2007 Lopez de Heredia, Rioja Reserva, Viña Tondonia, Spain $42.89
Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is one of Spain's greatest wines. In fact, if I were to only buy one red wine from Spain, it would be Viña Tondonia. With complexity and longevity that would embarrass most first growth Bordeaux and at about 1/10 the price, this is truly an amazing wine and equally amazing value. Lopez de Heredia is perhaps the most traditional winery in the world with little changing in the way they make wine over the last 130+ years. The 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is the great young Viña Tondonia Reserva - probably the best of the decade up to this point. The nose offers enticing aromas of dried cherries, cigar box, leather and faint vanilla bean. The perfectly balanced and supremely elegant palate is well structured with good acidity and refined tannins that frame the complex flavors of dusty minerals, plums, dried herbs, orange peel and hazelnuts. This wine has amazing depth. Buy a case and watch it develop and gain in complexity over the next 30 years. “Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years.” - 96 Wine Advocate

2016 Davide Carlone, Boca, Alto-Piemonte, Italy $32.99
As local and traditional as it gets, Davide Carlone (who has never been on a plane) has held tight to the traditions of the Boca;s glorious past whie. Since the late 80s, he has labored to keep Boca alive, clearing woods and planting more and more Nebbiolo, Croatina and Vespolina where it once thrived. If you are unfamiliar with the wines of the Alto Piemonte, they are based on Nebbiolo and share many of the same attributes that Barolo and Barbaresco do, but have their own unique qualities and are often more ethereal. They can be mesmerizing and while they can age like their neighbors to the south in the Langhe, they usually don't require such extensive aging. Davide Carlone's Boca (a tiny 37 acre D.O.C.) is such a wine. Approximately 75% Nebbiolo and 25% Vespolina, Carlone's Boca offers beautiful fruit up front with notes of underbrush, dried herbs and earth in the background. As this wines ages, the earth-driven tones will become more accentuated. Enjoy over the next 20 years with all the same dishes you would drink Barbaresco or Barolo with.

2012 Dom. Jean-Pierre Gaussen, Bandol Rouge, Longue Garde, Provence, France $39.99
Geek Alert: Fans of old-school Bandol take note - this is the real deal. This is not one of those gussied up, lipstick sporting glossy juice-ball Bandols. The 2012 Gaussen Bandol Rouge offers an ethereal nose and the promise of greatness with some additional bottle age. The palate is tight, structured and balanced with a little dark fruit surrounded by notes of herbs de Provence, leather, a little wild game and a strong soil signature. In time, this will become the perfect food partner with cassoulet, garlicky lamb dishes and the like. Enjoy now with hearty fare, or better yet, through 2025-2035 for additional complexity. Awesome Bandol.

2018 Kelley Fox, Dundee Hills Pinot Noir, Maresh - Red Barn Block $89.89
I get to taste a lot of blue chip Pinot Noir every year, a lot. This may be the single greatest domestic Pinot I've tasted in the last few years. This wine has all the attributes of the above two Maresh bottlings, yet is somehow even finer in indescribable ways, at least for me. I don't pony-up for $90 wines for my personal cellar very often, but I was excited to for this wine. Wine like this doesn't come along very often and this is the last vintage for this bottling. This will provide scintillating drinking over the next 20 years.
