2018 Sivilli Wine Co. Blanc de Noirs, Charlie’s Vineyard, Dundee Hills, OR $40.00 bottle / $215.94($35.99) six-pack
Beautiful Blanc de Noirs copper color. 100% Pinot Noir from Charlie’s Vineyard (which abuts the famed Clos Electrique vineyard), fermented and then aged for a year in neutral oak. This smells a bit like Bereche’s Ambonnay Blanc de Noir, but is more nuanced on the palate. The expressive nose offers aromas of roasted chestnuts, buttery pie crust and autumnal scents of chanterelle mushrooms, hay and soil tones. The palate offers a balance of textural richness and complexity that is striking.  Notes of hazelnuts, cured meat, plums and a flinty minerality make for an extremely attractive wine. I very rarely find 100% Pinot Noir Blanc de Noirs to be this complex on both the nose and palate.

Sake Advent Calendar by Namasake Paul
I've known Paul for almost as long as I've owned Sec Wines. We've drank great Champagne together and of course, local Pinot. I'm excited to share his latest project, the only Sake Advent Calendar. The perfect gift for someone wanting to get into Sake, or already loves it! The enormous box contains twenty-three 180ml collectable cups of sake, plus one full-size bottle to enjoy on Christmas Eve. That's over four liters of sake, all hand-chosen by Namazake Paul. Many of these sake brands have never imported to the USA before! Most of the cups are glass with painted art — perfectly reusable for water cups, picnics or cut flowers. The box also includes an accompanying handbook written by Namazake Paul and 33 Books to learn the background on each sake, plus key terminology and a place to record tasting notes. Everyone will get the same sake on each day so they can compare with friends or join the online discussion via #sakecalendar on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. Behind every door is a cup for each day representing every major style of sake, including Futsu-shu, Honjozo, Junmai, Ginjo, Daiginjo, Namachozo, Yamahai, Kimoto and Nigori. The adventure awaits! Don’t know what all of those terms mean? This is why you need the Sake Advent Calendar! The beautiful box art by Kayla Swanson embodies the Japanese concept of “kawaii,” meaning adorable or cute. People will love displaying the Sake Advent Calendar as a holiday decoration. The Namazake Paul Advent Calendar is the perfect gift for the hardcore Advent Calendar collector looking for something new, Sake geek, friend wanting to get into Sake or, frankly, just treat yourself! 2016 Dom. Jean-Pierre Gaussen, Bandol Rouge, Longue Garde, Provence, France $39.99
Geek Alert: Fans of old-school Bandol take note - this is the real deal. This is not one of those gussied up, lipstick sporting glossy juice-ball Bandols. The 2016 Gaussen Bandol Rouge offers an ethereal nose and the promise of greatness with some additional bottle age. The palate is tight, structured and balanced with a little dark fruit surrounded by notes of herbs de Provence, leather, a little wild game and a strong soil signature. In time, this will become the perfect food partner with cassoulet, garlicky lamb dishes and the like. Enjoy now with hearty fare, or better yet, through 2025-2040 for additional complexity. Awesome Bandol.

NV(2019) Cazé Thibaut, Extra-Brut, Naturellement, Champagne, France $49.99
Champagne alert! New to the U.S. market last fall is Champagne from rising star Fabien Cazé. Cazé’s family has been bottling Champagne since 1953, but Fabien only started making his own estate-bottled Champagnes under his own label in 2013. Cazé organically farms just under three hectares of vines in on the Rive Droite, or northern bank of the Valée de la Marne - the best of Pinot Meunier country! An enticing light copper color, the Naturellement is highly aromatic with classic Meunier fruit on the nose and autumnal scents that add intrigue and complexity. The palate is very focused with outstanding balance and complexity. Plum, toasted baguette, and minerals dominate that palate. Already delicious and very satisfying now, this Champagne will only improve and gain in complexity over the next five years. Fans of Bereche’s Rive Gauche and Jerome Prevost’s La Closerie will love this Champagne.

2009 Lopez de Heredia, Rioja Reserva, Viña Tondonia, Spain $47.89
Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is one of Spain's greatest wines. With complexity and longevity that would embarrass most first growth Bordeaux and at about 1/10 the price, this is truly an amazing wine and equally amazing value. Lopez de Heredia is perhaps the most traditional winery in the world with little changing in the way they make wine over the last 130+ years. The nose offers enticing aromas of dried cherries, cigar box, leather and faint vanilla bean. The perfectly balanced and supremely elegant palate is well structured with good acidity and refined tannins that frame the complex flavors of dusty minerals, plums, dried herbs, orange peel and hazelnuts. Buy a case and watch it develop and gain in complexity over the next 30 years. As if it matters: “Sweet berries, cherries, cedar and dried flowers on the nose. Some lemon and lime zest, too! Medium-to full-bodied with tight, integrated tannins that show wonderful length and reserve. So fresh and vivid. Lots of energy. A wonderful, classic wine. Drink or hold.” - 97 James Suckling & “The 2009 Viña Tondonia Reserva, a blend of 70% Tempranillo, 20% Garnacho and 5% each Mazuelo and Graciano, matured in used American oak barrels for six years. It has some toasted character, with ripe fruit, black rather than red, denoting a warm year but more restrained than the Bosconia Reserva from the same vintage. 2009 is a year of ripeness, concentration and tannin; the wines are powerful, but here you see the finesse of Tondonia in comparison to the more rustic Viña Bosconia.” - 93 Wine Advocate

2016 Val di Suga, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany $54.89
This may be the last great Brunello (100% Sangiovese) from the epic 2016 Tuscan vintage. Certainly, it’s a contender for the best Brunello deal of this vintage as well as one of my personal favorites. Aromatically, texturally and flavor-wise, this big red is all about precision and balance. Get it while you still can. “There’s something savory and slightly rustic about the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino that I find quite attractive. Baked black cherries, balsamic spice and hints of animal musk form up to create a beguiling display. The textures are silky-smooth, with cooling acids and salty minerals lifting the expression while giving way to tart red fruits…the 2016 comes across as both youthfully structured but also spicy and fresh. This is a blend of Val di Suga’s vineyards throughout Montalcino, refined all in large Slavonian oak. Drink through 2034” - 92 Vinous Also: 94 Jeb Dunnuck, 93 Wine Spectator, 94 James Suckling. Limited.
