Long time readers know the drill by now -vintage in, and vintage out, this wine amazes and always satisfies (especially with roast chicken with sautéed mushrooms & buttered carrots! ) Fleurie is the source of the most elegant Gamay on earth and Clos de la Roilette is the shining example of Fleurie. 2020 Domaine du Collier, Saumur Blanc, Loire Valley $65.99
Antoine Foucault is making some of the most exciting wines in the Loire Valley. The Domaine du Collier was created in 1999 by Antoine (son of Charly Foucault from the famed Clos Rougeard). Having worked at Clos Rougeard for four years, he took the opportunity to buy four-hectares of vines in the commune of Brézé in the best lieu-dit of 'La Ripaille'. The estate comprises 6 hectares with the vast majority of the estate planted to Chenin Blanc (including some 100-year-old vines) and just under a hectare of Cabernet Franc. There is a substance to these wines that is impressive, but more importantly, there is clarity to them & a precision that demands attention. These are powerful, mineral-driven wines that do not assault the palate but seek to impress on grounds of their brilliant composition. The 2020 Saumur Blanc is from low yielding old vines grown on predominantly clay limestone soils and is a very powerful and complex wine even while young. The palate is very lively and broad with crystalline Chenin fruit and Saumur minerality with super concentration. As with the best Chenin Blanc, the magic happens as the wines age and evolve, and this will do so magnificently through 2033. Don’t buy this wine because it’s going to be a collector’s item, buy it because it’s freakin’ great.

2020 Domaine du Collier, Saumur Rouge, La Ripaille, Loire Valley $74.99
Domaine du Collier Saumur Rouge La Ripaille is a masterful take on Cabernet Franc. It has a booming resonance yet remains incredibly precise and finely detailed that fans of the wines of the Clos Rougeard will find lots to like. In addition to its family resemblance to Clos Rougeard, there are also aspects of the wine that resemble the best Cabernet Franc-based Bordeaux like Cheval Blanc with its earthy nature and firm, but fine-grained tannins and the way it balances elegance with power. Above all, there is a refinement to this wine that escapes most other Cabernet Francs regardless of where they are from. A masterpiece in the making. Enjoy now through 2044.

2011 Lopez de Heredia, Rioja Reserva, Viña Tondonia, Spain $54.89
Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is one of Spain's greatest wines. With complexity and longevity that would embarrass most first growth Bordeaux and at about 1/10 the price, this is truly an amazing wine and equally amazing value. Lopez de Heredia is perhaps the most traditional winery in the world with little changing in the way they make wine over the last 130+ years. If you have a kid born in 2011 or got married in 2011 - stock up! Don’t mess around, buy this wine and enjoy it over the next 25 years. As if it matters: “The wine is showing beautifully at age thirteen, offering up a bright and complex bouquet of raspberries, black cherries, smoked meats, Rioja spice tones, a lovely base of chalky soil, cigar wrapper and a lovely, discreet framing of American oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and just starting to show a bit of velvetiness on the attack, with a lovely core of fruit, moderate tannins, tangy acids, fine focus and grip and a long, complex and impeccably balanced finish. This is already quite tasty, though of course, still in climbing mode and will be even better down the road, as there are some tannins here still to resolve. Fine juice.” - 93 John Gilman / “(13%). Aged for nearly six years in very old barrels, Tondonia is one of Rioja's most proudly traditional wines. Tempranillo dominated, with 20% Garnacha and 5% of both Graciano and Mazuelo, this is complex, mature and well-structured, with plenty of acidity, sinewy tannins, some balsamic sweetness and a taut, focused, age-worthy finish. 2023-35.” - 95 Tim Atkin, MW / “A traditional beauty that effuses iron, warm earth and savory tobacco leaves, together with plums, spices and orange zest. This is juicy and still tight, with firm but savory tannins. Medium-weight and quite zesty in texture, as is the case with the other López de Heredia reds tasted this session. Drink now or hold.” - 95 JS / "The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance.” - 94 Luis Gutiérrez, WA / 94 Vinous

2023 Atalier by Raul Perez, Albariño, A Cruz das Ánimas, Rías Baixas, Spain $31.99
Over the last few years, many of you, like myself, have come to realize that Albariño can be seriously good, world class white wine. The Atalier from Raúl Pérez is an example of the ecstatic heights that old-vine Albariño can reach when treated with the respect, care, and the patience it deserves. Everything Raul Perez touches seems to turn to gold. Certainly, that’s true here with his Albariño. A Cruz das Ánimas (“The Crossroads of Souls”) is nothing short of explosive. Atalier comes from two parcels of own-rooted, pre-phylloxera Albariño vines in the Cambados area of the Salnés valley, located in the southern portion on the northwest tip of Spain. Aromas of oyster shell, lemon zest and jasmine segue to a palate of great intensity, emphasizing the tension between ripe stone fruits, quince, obvious minerality and balancing acidity. Enjoy with taps or anything coming out of the ocean now through 2032.

2022 Arterberry Maresh, Dundee Hills Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, OR SALE $29.99 - Reg. $33.50
Jim Arterberry's "Dundee Hills" bottling is comprised of mostly Weber and Maresh vineyard fruit and drinks more like a Pinot selling for $45 than for one less than $30. The elegant yet lush Arterberry Maresh house style is on full display here and offers tangy blue and red fruits, Dundee Hills earthy notes and fantastic balance. "A deep magenta, the 2022 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills is lifted and floral, with fruit verging more toward raspberry than strawberry, with dusty rose and hints of spice. It's sleek and racy, with supple textures and crisp wild berries cascading across a core of juicy acidity. This finishes long and staining yet remarkably fresh, leaving a lingering whisper of licorice and a gentle tension. Drink through 2030” - 91 Vinous & “Pommard, Wadenswil (50%) and a bit of Dijon, the youngest vines on the Maresh estate, are from 1997, as well as plantings from 1991, 83, and 70, all of it own-rooted. Earth and rose petals announce gorgeous aromatics. Winemaker Jim Maresh destems 100%. It sees 18-24 months in barrel. At $33.50, this may be the best deal in American wine. Earthen aromatics, pine bough, and blood orange spritz. The palate is fresh with blue and red bramble fruits, spicy clove and savoury herbaceousness.” - 96 Decanter.
