2016 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave, Hermitage Rouge, N. Rhone $288.89
Yep. The one and only. The greatest, longest-lived Syrahs on the planet and from the classic 2016 vintage to boot. Due to arrive late May, but reserve now as it will likely be sold out by the time it arrives. "Jean-Louis Chave showed me this unfinished wine in components. #1) Les Beaume: a gorgeous bouquet evokes red and blue fruit liqueur, incense, Asian spices and smoky minerals. Shows a very suave blend of depth and energy, silky texture and vibrant black raspberry and boysenberry flavors that spread out steadily on the back half. #2) Meal: much more firm and stern than the Les Beaume, showing bitter cherry, licorice and olive character and solid grip. Chewy and focused, but there's a core of appealingly sweet dark fruit as well. Opens up a bit with air, but this is solid and has a serious backbone. #3) Ermite: complex and intensely perfumed, displaying exotic floral and spice notes and powerful, alluringly sweet dark berry character. The floral quality dominates a very long, smooth finish where fine-grained tannins build slowly and in harmony with the dark fruit. #4) Bessards: Succulent and focused, displaying ripe dark fruit liqueur, spicecake and violet pastille qualities energized by vibrant spice and mineral flourishes. Sweet and densely packed yet animated, with superb clarity; a sexy cola nuance emerges on the back half. The mix of depth, power and energy here is textbook Chave, and this bottling will be a must-buy for those who can find and afford it.” - 96-98 points Vinous "I was able to taste the 2016 Hermitage from three separate tanks which are blended prior to bottling. All three samples showed brilliant purity of fruit, full body, a forward, seamless, elegant texture, and classic building minerality. This is haute couture at its finest and is pure class that could come from nowhere else. As with most 2016s, it's going to be relatively accessible in its youth, yet this is one Hermitage that's not going to hit maturity for another 8-10 years and will keep for three decades.” - 96-99 points Jeb Dunnuck "A wealth of floras with spiced dark chocolate, peppery notes, graphite, dark stones and grilled meats. There’s a very concentrated core of red and black fruit on the palate, weighing deep into the middle with super fine yet strong tannins wrapping up the wine. There is also enduring red-fruit freshness emerging into the finish. This is a great Hermitage that will deliver incredible age potential and enjoy an esteemed life in bottle. Barrel sample.” - 98 points James Suckling "Still mostly in separate components, the 2016 Hermitage nevertheless looks sensational. Les Beaumes was very pretty and red fruited, with silky tannins (94 - 96). Le Méal was putting itself forward as plush and velvety, with flowers, crushed stone and ripe fruit (95 - 97). A combined sample of les Bessards and l'Hermite showed great, granite-derived structure allied to licorice and cassis.” - 96-98 points Wine Advocate

2013 Caprili, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany $43.89
Caprili has done it again. For years, Caprili has made not just good, but great Brunello, all the while flying under the radar because they don't have a marketing arm. With most of the great 2013 Brunello di Montalcinos costing well over $65.00, the 2013 Caprili offers thrilling Brunello at a more affordable price. Caprili has long been one of our favorite Brunello producers because they offer wonderfully complex Brunello that can be enjoyed young or cellared for many years. Caprili is not issuing a 2013 Riserva only because they have a lot of Riserva in the pipeline which means all of their would-be Riserva juice is in this bottling. Yeah! The 2013 Brunello offers a thrilling nose and rich, well-balanced palate with power and elegance to spare. Beautiful fruit complements this earth-driven Brunello. “Bright red with a pale rim. Blackberry, earthy spices, mint, minerals, game and violet on the very deep but still youthfully reticent nose. Dense, energetic, large-scale and brooding on the palate, offering floral flavors of red and dark berries and underbrush. Finishes extremely long, scented and subtle, featuring very suave tannins. Cellar this beauty for at least another five years, as it will likely blossom into something special; the plus sign on my score indicates that I would not be surprised to find myself scoring this 95 or 96 in the years ahead. Drink through 2035” - 93+ Ian D’Agata, Vinous / 94 J.S. / 92 W.S. / 92 W.A. / 92 W.E

2015 Colombera & Garella, Bramaterra, Cascina Cottignano, Alto Piedmont, Italy $35.89
From the tiny DOC Bramaterra, this is a blend of 80% Nebbiolo, 10% Croatina, 10% Vespolina. Weighing in at 12.5% alcohol, this wine is mid-weight and lithe compared to Barolo and Barbaresco, yet there is no lack of concentration. The nose is Barbaresco-like, but with more dimensions from the addition of the Vespolina and Croatina. The palate is very soil-driven with a strong streak of volcanic minerality piercing the wine's red fruit and savory flavors. A touch of pleasant rusticity and great complexity make for an extremely satisfying wine with so much vibrancy and energy. Enjoy now and over the next fifteen years with mushroom risotto, braised meat, game, and game birds. Rockin’! Only 291 cases made. Very limited.

2016 Felsina, Chianti Classico, Tuscany $23.89
Vintage-in and vintage-out, Felsina is the most consistent winery in Tuscany. Hailing from the hamlet of Berardenga in the southern-most region of the Chianti Classico zone, Felsina issues beautifully pure and very structured Chianti Classico that combine power and finesse in a manner few Tuscan wineries can. After the unusually ripe and forward 2015 vintage, the 2016 is a return to the much more classic style of the estate. "This is fragrant and floral with dark berries on the nose. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. A driven and linear Chianti Classico. The backbone of fresh acidity gives this focus.” - 93 James Suckling
