2013 Caprili, Brunello di Montalcino, Tuscany $43.89
Caprili has done it again. For years, Caprili has made not just good, but great Brunello, all the while flying under the radar because they don't have a marketing arm. With most of the great 2013 Brunello di Montalcinos costing well over $65.00, the 2013 Caprili offers thrilling Brunello at a more affordable price. Caprili has long been one of our favorite Brunello producers because they offer wonderfully complex Brunello that can be enjoyed young or cellared for many years. Caprili is not issuing a 2013 Riserva only because they have a lot of Riserva in the pipeline which means all of their would-be Riserva juice is in this bottling. Yeah! The 2013 Brunello offers a thrilling nose and rich, well-balanced palate with power and elegance to spare. Beautiful fruit complements this earth-driven Brunello. “Bright red with a pale rim. Blackberry, earthy spices, mint, minerals, game and violet on the very deep but still youthfully reticent nose. Dense, energetic, large-scale and brooding on the palate, offering floral flavors of red and dark berries and underbrush. Finishes extremely long, scented and subtle, featuring very suave tannins. Cellar this beauty for at least another five years, as it will likely blossom into something special; the plus sign on my score indicates that I would not be surprised to find myself scoring this 95 or 96 in the years ahead. Drink through 2035” - 93+ Ian D’Agata, Vinous / 94 J.S. / 92 W.S. / 92 W.A. / 92 W.E

2005 Lopez de Heredia, Rioja Reserva, Viña Tondonia, Spain $37.89
Lopez de Heredia's Viña Tondonia Rioja Reserva is one of Spain's greatest wines. In fact, if I were to only buy one red wine from Spain, it would be Viña Tondonia. With complexity and longevity that would embarrass most first growth Bordeaux and at about 1/10 the price, this is truly an amazing wine and equally amazing value. Lopez de Heredia is perhaps the most traditional winery in the world with little changing in the way they make wine over the last 130 years. The nose offers enticing aromas of dried cherries, cigar box, leather and faint vanilla bean. The perfectly balanced and supremely elegant palate is well structured with good acidity and refined tannins that frame the complex flavors of minerals, plums, dried herbs, orange peel and hazelnuts. This wine has amazing depth. As if it matters: “A staggering range of aromas, from dried mango and papaya through toasted nuts to dried flowers. Powerful and concentrated, but not at all fat, this has a stunning texture, due to the interplay of tannins and richness. Very long, intense finish. Drink or hold.” - 96 points, James Suckling ~ “Traditional Rioja at its ageworthy best…” - 96 Decanter ~ Blah, blah, blah - 93 Wine Advocate

2016 Felsina, Chianti Classico, Tuscany $23.89
Vintage-in and vintage-out, Felsina is the most consistent winery in Tuscany. Hailing from the hamlet of Berardenga in the southern-most region of the Chianti Classico zone, Felsina issues beautifully pure and very structured Chianti Classico that combine power and finesse in a manner few Tuscan wineries can. After the unusually ripe and forward 2015 vintage, the 2016 is a return to the much more classic style of the estate. "This is fragrant and floral with dark berries on the nose. Medium body, firm and silky tannins and a fresh, clean finish. A driven and linear Chianti Classico. The backbone of fresh acidity gives this focus.” - 93 James Suckling

2014 Produttori del Barbaresco, Barbaresco “Normale” $32.89 *net
Come and get it!!! Antonio Galloni's review (below) nailed it.  This is one of best versions of this wine I can remember. "The 2014 Barbarescos confirm all the potential they showed as recently bottled wines a year ago. Vibrant, perfumed and beautifully delineated, the 2014s capture the essence of what makes Nebbiolo so compelling. In short, the 2014 Barbarescos speak to the essence of site as expressed in one of the most unusual growing seasons in recent memory...It is a vintage that will especially please readers with classically leaning palates.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous 10/31/17 "The 2014 Barbaresco is fabulous. Lifted in the glass, with striking perfume and captivating translucency, the Produttori's Barbaresco captures all the elements that make this vintage so compelling. Today, the 2014 is very, very young. What stands out most is its textural finesse and balance. It will be a number of years before the aromas and flavors are fully expressive. The only thing that might come as a surprise is the touch of new cask in this wine. Otherwise, the 2014 is one of the finest editions of the straight Barbaresco I can remember tasting, not to mention a superb example of how magnificent this vintage is in Barbaresco. Don't miss it.” - 93 Antonio Galloni, Vinous & 94 Wine Advocate
